  1. A parachute is any canopied fabric device 
  2. strapped to a person or a package, used to 
  3. slow down descent from a high altitude, or 
  4. returning spent missiles or parts to a safe 
  5. speed for landing, or sometimes to aid 
  6. (through braking) the landing of a plane or 
  7. missile. Modern designs enable the 
  8. parachutist to exercise considerable control 
  9. of direction, as in skydiving.
